A new school year filled with new things and unknown adventures is upon us. Below are some tips for back to school safety.
Boost Immune Health
To help boost your child’s immune system, so they can have a healthy and happy school year give them lots of vitamin C. Some excellent food choices for Vitamin C are oranges, red peppers, kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and strawberries.
School Tour
Before classes begin take a tour of the school with your children. Meet their new teachers and help them get comfortable with their new surroundings. This is especially valuable when a child may be moving from the elementary school to the middle school.
Walk or Bike
If your child walks to school coordinate with other parents so all of them can go as a group. Make up a travel plan for your kids, utilizing main roads. If your child rides a bike to school make them wear a helmet and teach them to use crosswalks and obey crossing guards. Go over your address, and emergency contact numbers with your children. That way of something does come up they know how to get ahold of yourself or a trusted family member.
Ride The Bus
If your children take the bus to school take the time to go over proper safety precautions. Advise them to stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. Have a safe place to wait for the bus, away from traffic and the road. When your child gets off the bus have them walk ten giant steps away from it. Inform them that if they drop something do not just bend over and pick it up, but to get the attention of the bus driver and have him or her give the okay to go get it.
Bus Safety For Other Drivers
It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. The punishment can be anywhere from $100-$500 in fines, not including court fees. As well as an additional 100 hours of community service. If the school bus is flashing yellow lights it is alerting drivers that it is preparing to stop, drivers around the bus should begin to do the same. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign mean the bus has come to a stop and children are getting on or off.
These are just a few tips to ensure a healthy, safe, and enjoyable school year. For further information consult with school district employees to get the latest tips on the happenings at your child’s school.
